This ongoing artistic research investigates how acts of perception transform still life into landscape. 


Beginning with drawing studies developed during an experimental session at Slade School of Fine Art in 2024, the project has gradually expanded into material explorations with clay, glaze, ash, and fire. Through fragments, surfaces, and small terrains, including layered sediments and ash washes, the work traces how objects, materials, and environments dissolve into one another. Each piece functions both as an individual observation and as part of a larger, evolving landscape. 


The practice traces a learning process of perceiving the world—like in McCullers’ 𝘈 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦. 𝘈 𝘙𝘰𝘤𝘬. 𝘈 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥.—where perception itself becomes a form of love.

	This series of practice works explores the paradoxical and meditative shifts between perception and reality, echoing the insight that “mountains are mountains, waters are waters.” By allowing still life to appear, dissolve, and reappear as landscape, these studies invite viewers to reconsider what they think they see—revealing how appearance and truth continually fold into one another.

Emerging from the 2024 drawing studies where still life first shifted toward landscape, these works continue the research through clay and ash. Each surface records a moment before form fully appears— a quiet threshold where materials begin to speak, and where perception moves with them, slowly, into becoming. This series remains open-ended, unfolding through ongoing attempts to sense how landscapes might take shape before they arrive.

Shells of an Unmade Realm is a series emerging from this material investigation.

Working with clay bodies, ash deposits, and glaze fragments, the pieces resemble partial crusts, sedimentary surfaces, or fragments of an unfinished terrain.

Currents flow ceaselessly into the ocean, our eternal yearning and interrogation of the
boundless horizon stretch endlessly beyond the here and now.

					
“Resonance, Unending” originated from a journey of two practitioners to the seaside town
of Margate. Its coastline has inspired countless artists to transform sensory experiences
into creations, leaving traces that traverse time and space. Seeking to comprehend this
unutterable perceptual experiences, they explore ideas through respective interpretations
and different mediums and techniques, anchored by the aesthetic concept of the 'Sublime'
as the curatorial axis of this exhibition. By intertwining perspectives and works, they aim
to open up an infinite dialogue with the viewers.

					
Kant proposed the philosophical concept of the 'Sublime,' describing it as an experience of
awe and frustration when facing something beyond our control or understanding. It
involves transforming the negative feeling of limitation into a positive harvest.1&#38;nbsp; This
concept articulates humanity's awareness of its own insignificance and mediocrity in the
face of grand natural phenomena. Our bodies may perish, but the sensory experiences
encapsulated in artworks can transcend time.

					
This exhibition aims to juxtapose and articulate the collision and tension between individual consciousnesses, as the two artists deconstruct and express their shared experiences
and reflections through artistic research. Returning to their familiar land in Taiwan, they
reset their works beside another ocean, hoping to stimulate an ongoing dialogue that
echoes endlessly through different people, times, and spaces.

In this realm of waves and whispers, where the port meets the sea, I, adrift, intend to capture the gleaming upon the water. Amongst these reflections, my research 'Shimmering in Your Sphere' takes form, capturing the essence of light as it gleams like stars in the night sky, mirroring the vastness of planets in their orbits. 
I am like a navigator, a sailor temporarily moored in this space yet ready to unfurl my sails toward another horizon of uncertainty, ever drawn by the allure of awe and wonderment that the ocean's shimmering depths promise.







Note:
Pei-Yao Chang participated in an Artist in Residency at Space Moor Gallery (Zhengbin Harbour Museum of Art) in Keelung, Taiwan, in April 2024. Through this residency, she followed the rhythm of Keelung, tracing along the maritime history and footpaths, and used mediums such as, lens-based media, charcoal, and watercolour to document this journey. Among them, a series of artworks titled "Shimmering in Your Sphere" drew inspiration from the changing light and shadows on the sea surface in the bay of Zhengbin Fishing Port. The artist captured the shimmering waves of Zhengbin Harbor in both daytime and nighttime, under clear skies and rainy days, akin to the twinkling of stars in celestial bodies, as if traversing another time and space, gently descending under this starry sky.

‘The sublime is not an ontology but a phenomenology, not a special essence of certain things but rather an experience of a particular kind, born out of the encounter between consciousness and the world.’[1]


This is an ongoing series which explores the profound and awe-inspiring moments experienced through the encounter between consciousness and seascapes.

‘A Figure, Figures
II’ is a series of temporary sculptures reproduced from soil and compost. This
is an extension work of ‘A Figure, Figures’ - both a data visualization and a
pun, and is presented at the Royal College of Art Graduate Show 2022, Battersea
South campus. The title plays on the polysemous meanings of the word figure, as
both “shape” and “monetary value” which is thus deconstructed and transformed
from one of many visual amenity valuation tools, The Helliwell System. A three
dimensional organic texture, unlike flat Risographs (from A Figure, Figures), seeks to extend another
possibility to contextualize of non-human perspective. This body of artwork
aspires to reveal the evaluation workflow through&#38;nbsp; monetary value and provokes us to consider
the limitations of how humans assess the value of a tree.

In the United Kingdom (UK) a tree, group of trees or a woodland subject to a Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) cannot be removed, uprooted or pruned without written consent. &#38;nbsp;It is not easy to apply TPOs for trees. TPOs are made by local planning authorities (LPAs) in England to protect trees in the interests of ‘amenity’, or attractiveness of a place. 
However, the boundary between human property and trees' roots and branches in their natural state could result in controversy, even a legal challenge. 

How do we evaluate ‘amenity’ for a monetary value for a court case? What could unfold, if however, we instead take a non-human perspective? What could ‘amenity’ mean for trees?

A Reconciliation is an&#38;nbsp; artistic research project that rethinks the boundary and tensions between human / non-human relationships in a legal context. The project is a multiple-media installation that includes an archive of legal cases, digital prints, and an analog memory box to compose a trio of artefacts,&#38;nbsp;[2016] UKUT 300 (LC),&#38;nbsp;A Figure, Figures&#38;nbsp;and ‘A Tree, A Stone, A Cloud’.

Within this reconciliatory journey, audiences are invited to travel from a legal procedure through affective aspects, through space and time, and re-imagine TPO regulation from the perspective of urban trees in the UK whilst simultaneously opening intimate conversations and connections with trees.

A Figure, Figures is a series of Risographs – both a data visualization and a pun. The title plays on the polysemous meanings of the word figure, as both “shape” and “monetary value” which is thus deconstructed and transformed from one of many visual amenity valuation tools, The Helliwell System.[1] This artwork aspires to reveal the evaluation workflow through a monetary value and provokes us to consider the limitations of how humans assess the value of a tree.The extension of this work, ‘A&#38;nbsp;Figure, Figures II’, was presented at the Royal College of Art Graduate Show 2022, Battersea South campus.
